Why off-the-shelf flashings cause problems
A standard flashing assumes a standard angle. Real roofs are rarely standard, particularly on renovations where a new roof meets an old one at whatever pitch the original builder chose. Stretching a stock section across that gap leaves a gap, and a bead of sealant over it lasts about as long as the sealant.
On membrane roofs the flashing has to become part of the waterproofing rather than sit on top of it. Metal is dressed in and the membrane welded to it, so there is one continuous system rather than two things meeting at a seam.
